Parents naturally want to fill their baby’s tummy with nutritious and delicious foods. From the time they are born, these little ones depend on us to nourish them.
With so many choices, it may feel easier to grab something out of a box to feed your baby. But just as adults need more nutrition than a box can offer, so does your baby.
We call high nutrition foods, superfoods. Superfoods for babies help spur development and growth.
We all know fruits and vegetables have their benefits, but it can be hard to figure out what ones to feed, how to feed them, and what nutritional value they each will have for your child.
So, we've compiled a list of 5 superfoods for babies that will help your child develop and grow.
1. Bananas
The carbohydrates and fiber help sustain your baby’s energy levels, so they stay active and happy.
Bananas are easy superfoods for babies. You can quickly toss in the diaper bag and have on hand for those on-the-go snacks. Bananas are also great for mixing with other fruit. Our kiddos have loved a pear and banana puree, see the video above.
2. Sweet Potatoes
The naturally sweet and filling vegetable is packed with antioxidants that help prevent certain types of cancer.
Cook a sweet potato in the oven at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 40 minutes, or microwave one. The best part about sweet potatoes is the wide variety of options for serving.
You can serve them as fries, mashed or cubed. It also works really well in a puree, believe it or not - apples and sweet potatoes are delicious.
3. Avocados
The avocado has a high protein content and is rich in the “good” kind of fat to prevent heart disease. Mash them, leaving some texture, and spoon feed the green goodness to your baby.
You can mix some avocado with rice cereal and formula/breastmilk to make a textured treat for your little one.
4. Eggs
Containing both protein and zinc, eggs are a perfect food for muscle development. They also contain choline, which is crucial for brain development.
Eggs are one of those super versatile foods – especially for babies. Scramble them for a snack, throw into other meals, or hard boil and chop.
5. Carrots
Carrots are also one of those versatile superfoods for babies. This vegetable is packed with good nutrients. Ideal to support healthy vision and provide essential vitamins for development.
For baby, we suggest cooking until very soft and using in different pureés or as a mashed side for your little one to snack on.
