What Material to Swaddle a Baby in During the Summer

As new parents we worry about whether our newborn is too warm or too cold. Especially when swaddling. They look so snug and comfortable all wrapped up, but then we think – won’t they get hot?

In the summer months knowing what to swaddle a baby in and the signs of a baby that is too warm is important. Excess heat can lead to risks like SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome).

Below you will learn easy ways to tell if your baby is too warm, the best fabrics for swaddling your baby in warm weather, and some simple ways to keep baby the right temperature at night.

Best Material for Swaddling Your Baby in Warm Weather

First off, in the warm summer months, we’d suggest swaddling just from the chest down. There are some really good tutorials out there for the half swaddle.

Using lightweight, breathable material when swaddling baby in the summer is key to keeping their temperature regulate. The following materials seem to work best to keep baby cool:

  • Muslin
  • Light Flannel
  • Lightweight Cotton
  • Linen

Best Ways to Keep Baby Cool While Swaddled

Although your choice in fabric will play a role in the warmth of your baby, there are other ways you can keep your baby from getting too warm while sleeping.

  • Make use of layers. Use no more than on additional layer than an adult would wear
  • Dress your baby in a light onesie or just a diaper on very warm nights
  • Use a fan, that is not directly pointed at your baby, to help with airflow
  • Try to keep your baby’s sleeping environment between 65-72 degrees Fahrenheit

How to Tell if Your Baby is Too Warm

You can take all the necessary precautions, but you still may not be able to tell if your baby is too warm or too cold.

If you are unsure, look for the following physical signs:

  • Damp hair
  • Sweaty back and chest
  • Red ears
  • Rapid pulse
  • Heavier breathing

You can always do the touch test too! Touch your baby’s chest, back or abdomen with your wrist or lips (these areas are more sensitive than your hand). Baby’s chest, back, and abdomen should feel warm and dry – not sweaty or cold.

Swaddling can be very soothing and allow your baby a better night’s rest – even in the summer months.
